Natural History Museum

Trakya University Natural History Museum was established in 2022 by the team led by Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Çamlıtepe with the contribution and support of Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Tabakoğlu. The specimens exhibited in the museum are original and were prepared by the lecturers of Trakya University Biology Department in accordance with museum techniques. No hunting was done in the procurement of the specimens.

In the museum, 1923 specimens belonging to a total of 754 species of various invertebrates-insects, molluscs, plants, fish, bivalves, reptiles, birds and mammals collected from different regions of our country, especially reflecting the biological richness of the Thrace region, are exhibited. The scientific data of these specimens are presented to local and foreign visitors in Turkish and English on the information panels and on the flowing touch screen.

The Natural History Museum has an international herbarium containing more than 100.000 insect materials, 2000 identified insect species, more than 1000 skeletal and stuffed vertebrate specimens and 15000 plant specimens in the Biology Department warehouses of Trakya University in order to provide service to international researchers and to support the living museum content.

The Natural History Museum, which has the status of a private museum affiliated to Trakya University, was opened to visitors on 07 January 2023.
