Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain

Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Fountain, the largest of the fountains built in Edirne, was built in the east-west direction on a sloping street in the north-south direction. The historical fountain, which is the largest fountain of Edirne, one of the most important centres of the Ottoman Period, was built by Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha in H.1077 / M.1667, as can be understood from the inscription. Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha, the famous grand vizier of Sultan Mehmet IV, had this fountain built seven years before he became grand vizier, when he was the grand vizier's district governor. It is seen that the fountain has not undergone a significant repair until the present day and has preserved its original structural features to a great extent. In this respect, the historical structure is one of the rare fountains in the city.
Kara Mustafa Pasha was born in Merzifon in 1635. In 1674, when Fazıl Ahmet Pasha died, he became grand vizier in his place. In 1683, when he failed in the siege of Vienna, he was executed (1684). Sources state that Merzifonlu had about ten fountains built in Edirne, of which no trace remains today.
