Keşan City Museum Building History

In 1914, the building was used as a Range Hospital during the Gallipoli War, and after the war it was renamed Keşan Red Crescent Migrant Hospital and opened on 1 February 1936.

Keşan Hospital, whose staff consisted of doctors, surgeons, nurses, administrative clerks, nurses, housekeepers, cooks and laundresses, was transferred to the Red Crescent and a new staff was formed. With the efforts of Dr Cemil Bey, the hospital was able to meet the needs of the district and its immediate surroundings.

In 1939, the closure of the hospital was on the agenda. As a result of objections, the hospital was transferred to the Special Provincial Administration and renamed Keşan Hometown Hospital.

After 1954, the Hometown Hospitals under the supervision of the Special Administration and other hospitals affiliated to Municipalities and Foundations were affiliated to the Ministry of Health to be administered from a single centre, and their names were changed to "State Hospital". Within the scope of this reform, all health institutions in Keşan were gathered under the roof of this building and started to serve under the name of "Keşan State Hospital".

The hospital building was repaired in 1959 in order to renovate and increase its capacity; without demolishing the outer walls, the wooden floor and ceiling in the interior were demolished and converted into reinforced concrete. The stone walls were also demolished and built with bricks. The rooms were enlarged and turned into two-bed rooms, and the stones from these rooms were used in the construction of the garden wall of the hospital. The idle basement of the building was excavated and deepened and used for health services.

The renovation of the hospital building was completed in 1960 and it served as Keşan State Hospital until the new hospital building was built in 1984. After the hospital moved, the building was used by the Health Vocational High School.

In 2019, the building was allocated to Keşan Municipality to become Keşan City Museum, and the restoration works that started in 2021 were completed in 2023. In the same year, exhibition arrangement and landscaping works were started within the scope of the museum project.

The building started to serve as Keşan City Museum on March 18, 2024.
