Kakava Festivities

Kakava is a celebration unique to Romani culture. Originating in Egypt and Asia Minor, this festival is still celebrated today.According to the history of Kakava, there were Copts (Roma) living with the Pharaoh in Ancient Egypt.

The Copts were persecuted by Pharaoh and fled. Pharaoh's soldiers chasing the Copts drowned in the waters. On the morning of the incident, the Romanians went down to the riverside and had fun to celebrate their salvation. True to its historical origins, they go down to the water's edge and have fun, as in Hıdrellez, celebrating with fire jumping, picnics, music and dancing are also part of the celebration.

Kakava means "Feast of Pots". It is also popularly said that the word kakava is a corruption of the words fragrant air or laughter.
