Fatih Sultan Mehmet Museum (Clock Madrasa)

Fatih Sultan Mehmet is one of the exceptional personalities of Turkish, Islamic and world history. He is the founding genius who closed an era and opened an era. Edirne is the city where Fatih was born, where he spent his childhood and youth, where his personality developed, and where he embarked on an undertaking that can be considered a breaking point in world history such as the conquest of Istanbul, where he ascended the throne twice.

The Clockwork Madrasa, which is the museum venue, is a part of Üç Şerefeli Mosque and Complex, one of the masterpieces of 15th century Ottoman architecture. The museum building was built by Sultan Murad II, who turned Edirne into a centre of knowledge with the madrasas he established.

The construction of the Clock Madrasa coincided with the childhood and early youth of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, to whom the museum is dedicated. It is rumoured that Fatih took lessons here when he was a prince or the first lesson ceremony called 'bed-i besmele' was held here.

The Clock Madrasa was destroyed in the great Edirne earthquake in 1752. While the work was abandoned, it was restored as a result of the project design and implementation carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations between 2014-2019.

On 16 July 2020, with the protocol signed between the Governorship of Edirne and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, it was decided to display and arrange the Clock Madrasa as the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Museum. In this context, in line with the search conference result report and under the supervision of the museum advisory board, the museum scenario was written, exhibition and content design was made.

It welcomes its visitors in the status of a private museum affiliated to the Special Provincial Administration of the Governorship of Edirne.
