Edirne Great Synagogue +

The Great Synagogue, the construction of which was permitted by the edict of 6 January 1906 in the neighbourhood where the Mayor Synagogue and the Apulia Synagogue were located, was built by the French architect France Depre and opened for worship in 1907 under the name Kal Kados ha Godal, replacing the 14 synagogues that were completely destroyed in the great fire that broke out in August 1905 in Edirne. The cost of the synagogue was covered by the congregation in the city, as well as money collected from Russia and various parts of Europe, especially Germany and Hungary. The building, described by Ersin Alok and Emili Mitrani as the largest synagogue in the Balkans and the third largest synagogue in Europe, was actively used until the 1960s, when the community was densely populated.
