Bulgarian Church of Sweti George +

Sv. Georgi Church, a basilica typical of the architectural style of the Bulgarian late Renaissance, is located on Tavukçu Street, Barutluk Neighbourhood, Kıyık District, northeast of Edirne.

It is known that the building was constructed between 1850-1880 and opened for use on 24 July 1880. Since it lost its congregation as a result of the intensive migration of the Bulgarian people, it served the congregation coming from Istanbul once a year in the second week of May for a long time. The building, which underwent partial repairs during the historical process, was reopened to visitors after the restoration completed in 2004. Today, since it is surrounded by buildings, it is not possible to see it from the main street.

The building consists of three main parts; narthex, main space with three naves and apse. The 320 m2 closed area church was built in masonry technique and the exterior walls of the building were terminated with a rich cornice in alternating style. Smooth cut stones were used at the corners of the building. While forming the body walls, rubble stones were used between three rows of bricks. On both sides of the narthex, which is a closed and narrow space in the west direction, there are two side entrances extending along the north and south walls of the main building and directly connected to the narthex. The entrance to the cellar, which was discovered during the restoration, is provided by a narrow and steep staircase by removing the wooden cover under the floor of the space. The main space, which is reached by climbing one step from the narthex, has four columns.
