Ali Pasha Bazaar +

Ali Pasha Bazaar is a bazaar built by Semiz Ali Pasha, who was the vizier between 1561 and 1565, to provide foundation income for his charity in Babaeski. It is understood from Tezkiretü'l-Ebniye that its architect was Mimar Sinan.

Here the building is registered as "Ali Pasha Bazaar and Caravanserai in Edirne". The number of shops of this bazaar is stated as 211+25 in the Edirne Evkaf Book dated 1568/69. Evliya Çelebi states that Ali Pasha Bazaar has gates like castle gates on both sides, its length is 1000 steps and there are 360 shops on both sides.

The top of the bazaar is covered with a masonry vault and covered with lead. Evliya Çelebi also writes that this bazaar was built by Mimar Sinan. In parallel with the disasters faced by Edirne in the 19th century, Ali Pasha Bazaar lost its bright condition, the shops were transferred to private ownership and the old regular administration disappeared. The bazaar was repaired in 1867/68 and General Kâzım Dirik, the governor general of Thrace, attempted to expropriate it in order to save it. The bazaar, which underwent another major repair in 1947, remained in a semi-empty state for many years, but it was revitalised with the revival of Edirne from 1960 onwards. Ali Pasha Bazaar is a typical arasta and consists of vaulted shops lined up on both sides of a vaulted road about 300 metres long. The long vault in the middle is reinforced with arches and each shop opens to the middle road as an arch.

The Ali Pasha Bazaar in Edirne is one of the most prominent bazaar types of Ottoman period Turkish architecture.
